Wednesday Review: Todays review comes from a band that youve - TopicsExpress

Wednesday Review: Todays review comes from a band that youve probably heard of, KoRn, and this review of their latest album which came out in 2013. KoRn The Paradigm Shift 2013 Genre: Electric Metal/ Thrash Before I listened to this album I wasn’t a massive fan of KoRn, in fact I wasn’t a fan of theirs at all so I had parallel expectations to the Dying Fetus album for this one. But, that was a mistake, a very surprising mistake. I recent albums KoRn have been, putting it bluntly, horrendous but thankfully they seemed to have hit the kill switch on the Melodic Death Metal button. The opening two tracks titled ‘Prey For Me’ and ‘Love and Meth’ are better than the title makes them out to seem. ‘Prey For Me’ has a strong electric rock backbeat and is the sort of backbeat you’d expect to hear from Skindred or a Rap Metal band. This mixed with KoRn’s Heavy Metal sound is fantastic. But, there is still a bit of Death Metal in these two songs which is very bad. ‘Love and Meth’ is one of the best songs on the album (despite the splash of Death Metal) with its modern sounding electric beat, metal pace and immense power. ‘Spike In My Veins’ starts off as a normal Heavy Metal song but it gets injected with some intense Electric Metal adrenaline and ignites into a high-tempo firecracker of a song. So far on this album Korn have got the balance between Metal and Electric spot on but that comes to an end on ‘Mass Hysteria’. The overuse of Heavy Metal (bordering Graveyard Metal) and a far too casual use of electric backing support transform this song into a random clattering of genres. If they kept the electro and sound effects out this might have been a better song. ‘Paranoid & Aroused’ is as weird as the title because of the strange warp sound in the chorus and this song just dissolves into Graveyard Rock song with an out of tune backtrack for the last minute or so. ‘Never Never’ was the single from this album and you can see why; this is hands down the best song on the album. But, it uses a random Dubstep Metal Bass drop at one point, it didn’t really make sense but it did kind of work. Apart from a slow and dull blip on the radar in ‘Lullaby to a Sadist’ the rest of the album is brilliant. So final words; if you’re thinking of buying a KoRn album get this one because it is by their best one but, it’s not the ‘album of the year’ by a long shot and KoRn just can’t seem to drop the Death Metal gimmick and until they do it will anchor them down.
