Wednesday, Sept. 25 marked the annual “See You at the Pole” event, a national Christian undertaking in which teenage students gather at the flagpoles of their respective schools in the morning to pray. For the second straight year, students at schools around Mecklenburg County participated in the event, along with leaders at area churches. In the South Hill area, the morning prayers sessions took place at Park View High, Park View Middle, South Hill Elementary and La Crosse Elementary, with members at Impact Church of God and South Hill Church of God also participating. “It’s great to see our youth participate in something so positive!” said Anita M. Miller, of the South Hill Church of God, who noted the prayer subjects spanned local schools, students and families to the wellbeing of the nation and world. At the middle school, there were an estimated 150 students who met at the flagpole to participate. James Alexander and Evelyn Wilcoxson facilitated the prayer there. Park View High School also had a nice turnout, with South Hill Church of God Pastor Robert Lockhart and Impact Church of God associate pastor Clarence Wagner also present. At South Hill Elementary School, the prayer happened before busses arrived and mainly consisted of faculty members and their children. Queenie Sykes facilitated the prayer at La Crosse Elementary. Impact Church of God Pastor Chafik Laaissaoui thanked Mecklenburg County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. James Thornton and the principals at each participating school for allowing the time of prayer.
