Wednesday evening(October 23rd) at English with Niamh our theme - TopicsExpress

Wednesday evening(October 23rd) at English with Niamh our theme was a visit to a Coffee Shop, followed by a visit to a Restaurant. The purpose of this theme was to be able to order a snack or a meal with confidence in English. As it is mid-term break for the first term of the new school year, many courses also take a break during this period because it is a very popular holiday time. But as I had no holiday plans, I told my class that I would be there if anyone wished to come. All except two turned up, which was a good turn out. We went through the basic words on a Coffee Shop menu for a light lunch and the input was very good from everyone. I noted down all the words and will type them out for the next class, including their French translations as not everybody understood every word. We then proceeded to a visit to a Restaurant with the same basic theme, going through what we would imagine we would find in a menu. We started with Pre-Dinner drinks, went through Starters and then onto the Main Course listing various vegetables, meats, fish and some dishes. Again, I noted everything and will type out and translate all the words suggested. I will revise this theme on Wednesday for the benefit of those absent, plus we will then continue with more Main Course dishes, and proceed to Dessert, followed by After-Dinner drinks. This is an interesting theme which we will play out in a sketch soon as it a subject of importance to anyone visiting an English speaking country. To add to the mood, Frank Sinatra sang some of his Greatest Hits in the background, and I think he will make a further appearance next Wednesday! Thank you to everyone for your very good suggestions, and I was quite impressed by some of the words you already knew. I was happy though to introduce a word no one had heard of - SPUDS!
