Wednesday is Diggers Members Garden day! And today were featuring the garden of Melani and her son Noah from Frankston VIC. Melani says: We initially had quite a small vegetable patch, started because my young son Noah (turning 9 next week) wanted fresh herbs to cook with. His love for cooking however was soon overcome by an even bigger love of gardening (plus a recent illness in the family highlighted the importance of fresh, organically grown food) and our tiny patch of veggies in the ground became 10 recycled apple crates as raised beds growing things such as kale, celery, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, spinach, silver beet, parsley, radish, lettuce, snow peas and rocket. In the last couple of weeks he has raised tomato, zucchini and cucumber seedlings that are now ready to plant out. He has berries growing around the fences and other edible plants and flowers throughout the other gardens. Even though we have the occasional problem with caterpillars, Noah wont allow any chemicals near his crops, hell simply pick off any caterpillars he finds and give them to the chooks. He always has a potter around in his garden before school and hes straight back out there when he returns from school each day (its also where Ill send him if hes a bit cranky as he always returns in a good mood).
