Wednesday, park staff had the honor of hosting biologists visiting from sister parks in Costa Ricas Sistema Nacional de Areas de Conservacion (SINAC). Signed into existence in June of 2013, the sister park program was spearheaded by staff at the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway and pairs parks in the Lake Superior/Upper Midwest region with parks in the Osa peninsula of Costa Rica to enhance protection of migratory birds and enrich the experience and training of staff in all participating parks. There are 166 species of birds that winter in Costa Rica and travel through the upper segment of the Mississippi River Flyway to their preferred breeding habitats each spring. Some of these birds nest right here at Effigy Mounds. We biologists know that these little songbirds migrate thousands of miles south each fall, but the fact is so much more real when one has the opportunity to meet the dedicated counterparts working on the other end of the birds migratory path. They may weigh mere ounces, but these little birds have been the catalyst for something very big - larger than our park, or even our nation - and very exciting. Stay tuned for more news and events! (js) NPS units include: St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Voyageurs National Park, Grand Portage National Monument, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Isle Royale National Park, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Effigy Mounds National Monument, Ice Age National Scenic Trail, Keweenaw National Historical Park, Pipestone National Monument, and the Great Lakes Inventory and Monitoring Network SINAC units include: Corcovado National Park, Marino Ballena National Park, Piedras Blancas National Park, Térraba Sierpe National Wetlands, Golfito Wildlife Refuge, Isla del Caño Biologicial Reserve, and Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve
