Wednesday, the U.S Supreme Court heard arguments challenging redistricting in Alabama. The issue at hand is whether Alabama can draw its election map with Black majority districts that in turn limit racially diverse areas where Democrats can compete. This is the court’s first major review of the Voting Rights Act requirements since the Shelby County v. Holder decision of last year. The Supreme Court is divided thus far with Supreme Court justices challenging both sides. The four liberal justices, the same who dissented from the VRA decision of last year, were sympathetic to the challenger, the Alabama Legislative Black Caucus. The conservative justices were more skeptical. However, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Anthony Kennedy sharply questioned both sides. Though it is too soon to tell which way the decision will go, the outcome could have a significant impact on the future of redistricting and voting rights for the entire country. Read more below.
