Wednesday turned out to be not as terrible horrible no good or very bad as I had anticipated. We did things just the way we wanted to. Nathan Hank Wists immediate family members drove from Fayetteville to Dutton in a caravan. The wild flowers along the way have never been more plentiful nor more beautiful. The greens of the trees have never been so lush. At Dutton we crossed the White River on a one-lane low-water bridge and drove up the hill on a rocky road to the small shady country cemetery. We sprayed with chigger spray and received warnings about snakes. We placed wild flowers on the casket. Hanks father Bob started things off by giving us a brief history of the Wists in Madison County and a run-down of Whos Who in the Dutton Cemetery. He was interrupted once to take care of a snake. Gabo was worried about the snake; he did NOT want it to be killed. GrandMaw Pauline Wist sat beside me and whispered comments into my ears. Because she is now deaf, she didnt realize that her whispers were actually loud enough for all to hear, but it didnt matter. It was endearing. My own Brother Paul led us in singing some old country hymns, including one crafted by Hank Williams himself, Ive Seen the Light. He talked some and he prayed some and then, after severe warnings about snakes, we were free to wander the cemetery and see the graves of Q.Z. Wist and a whole slew of other Wist folks. All in all, it couldnt have been more fitting. It was sad but it was comforting at the same time.
