Wednesday – Off to the UK today. Up early to get tickets for the train to Pisa. Walked to the train station with plenty of time to spare. As it turned out the train was 50 minutes late. We still had plenty of time to catch our flight to the UK, and have our sunscreen lotion confiscated by security, not sure if it was due to the size of the tube or that they knew we wouldn’t need it in England. Arrived ok in UK, luckily Caroline had organised wheelchair and buggy assistance as it quite a way to the car rental office. That night we had dinner with Pat and David in Reigate and then a drive to Basingstoke. As per normal we had trouble finding the hotel, but eventually got there around midnight. Caroline managed to hear some noises that required the service desk to come and tape over the vent. I was tired and just wanted to sleep. Thursday – Met with Ken, Margaret and Don for a chat. Which lasted about 5 hours. It was great to catch up with Ken, and finally meet Margaret and Don. Off to Canterbury, fun trying to find the hotel as they tend to put bollards in our way, a few drinks with Avril and Clive and the end to another long day. Friday – We went for a Punt on the Cam river, which gave plenty of insight into the Cambridge University and it various colleges. Then a quick look at Cambridge, into the round church and a look at the grasshopper clock. Not enough time to do the city justice, should have spent a few days here. Off to Jeannie’s where Sammi was also visiting. Jeannie kept us entertained with her various stories and use of the colourful English language. We left around 3.30pm to be in Cuckfield by 7.00pm. Traffic was heavy which meant the trip took twice as long as expected. But it was worthwhile with a great diner with Sarah and Nigel. Then off to Lyndsey and Ross’s in Saltdean. Saturday, so much for the nice weather for the long weekend, it is raining and I don’t like the chances of a BBQ this afternoon. The rain did hold off long enough for the BBQ but that was all, the rest of the time it was very wet. It was good to catch up with Sally, Fran and Jo. And to just relax with Ross and Lyndsey. Sunday. Head down the road to Paula and Greg’s for Karen’s 50th Birthday party. It seems that the Taylor’s grow to look like each other with lots of reminders of Caroline’s father John. Katherine put together a slide show with many photos and throughout it was easy to see the resemblance between the extended family. With the festivities starting around 2.00pm and finishing after midnight it was a long and enjoyable day. It was fantastic to see so many people celebrating Karen’s Birthday. Monday – A restful day not doing much at all, except for going out for dinner. A well-deserved lazy day Tuesday, final day in UK before starting the journey back to Oz on Wednesday. Caroline wants to do some shopping before catching up with Amanda tonight. The weather the last few days has been excellent, interesting people, good food and plenty to drink, what more could we ask for. while we haven’t done much sightseeing, we have enjoyed our time in the UK. Next time we will have to stay longer.
