Wednesdays FBC Devotional Thought “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.” Colossians3:15 I enjoy baseball and softball. When I was in middle school and high school, I played a lot of softball. For a couple years I was a pitcher but never really loved that position. Later, I played first base, and I loved that. I have never been very tall, as a prototypical first baseman usually is, but I was extremely flexible and could stretch farther than anyone else on the team, so they put me at first. Also, I am left-handed, so my glove hand was on the fair side of the bag rather than the foul side of the bag, so in theory I could have a better chance at stopping the ball. One particular game is forever etched in my mind. We were in a close game, and there were two outs. The batter hit a ground ball toward third base. The girl at third stopped the ball and made a throw that was just a little low and just a little short. I stretched my five foot tall self to the max and a millisecond before the runner reached first I scooped the ball up out of the dirt, keeping my left heel on the edge of the first base bag. My teammates began to cheer, and I began to smile because we got out of the inning without giving up any more runs, when, to my utmost surprise, the umpire yelled, “SAFE!” I was most unhappy. I said, “What? She’s out! Look! You can see my footprint in dirt, and my heel was on the bag!” He just shook his head and said, “There’s no way you stretched that far without taking your foot off the bag. She’s safe.” I knew then-just as I know now-that he was wrong, but he was the umpire. His ruling stood. This verse tells us that God’s peace is to rule in our hearts. The original Greek word used for rule, brabeuo, means to act as an umpire, to arbitrate, decide. The peace of God should be the determining factor of our hearts, but after I read this I had to ask myself how often that is the case for me. Is my heart ruled by the peace of God? Or is it ruled by confusion? Is it ruled by the clock or calendar? Is it ruled by sickness or fear? Is it ruled by my desire to please others? Scripture is clear. The peace of God is to rule in our hearts. The great thing about Scripture is that God is not going to give us a clear command or direction for something that we cannot do. That means we truly can have a life ruled by His peace! And then we are to be thankful. Why wouldn’t we be? Peace and thankfulness…..that’s a kind of life I want to have. Susan Veazey
