Week 1 St-Helena. My first week was mostly taken up by seeing the people that I filmed over the past few years. I was happy to find one person in particular who I assumed to have returned to the Falklands. To be able to sustain a living on the island many Saints are forced to seek employment offshore for several years. The military base of Ascension and the Falkland islands offer employment to Saints, which are often their only option as they will pay for their journey to and from the island. Many Saints will work for years in these other remote pockets of the world, leaving their families behind only to return at best once a year. The construction of the airport has improved the situation slightly but with each coming and going of the RMS people are still leaving. Melanie allowed me to film her departure on the wharf. With grace she said goodbye to her daughters (14 & 17). Emotions ran high as goodbyes are never easy. Approximately one hour later I heard the Ship blow its horns, marking its departure. With the RMS gone I suddenly felt so far away from everything.
