Week 11 – Parallel Parking Parallel parking is one of the most daunting driving manoeuvres for most of us. However, with the proper technique and practice it can become one of the easiest. When approaching the desired parking spot, check your mirrors for any traffic behind you. Signal ahead of time and begin slowing down in order to encourage the vehicle behind you to slow down as well. Once beside the corresponding vehicle, make sure you are one meter apart. Set up the back tail of the corresponding vehicle parallel to your back right side triangle window. Once you’re set up, put your car in reverse. Make sure you check your mirrors and over your shoulders for any approaching traffic/pedestrian. When the way is clear, signal and turn your wheel once towards the right. Begin reversing until the licence plate of the corresponding vehicle is in the middle of your passenger side window. Then turn your wheel towards the left twice and continue reversing slowly while observing your mirrors. If you feel you will hit the curb or a snow bank turn your wheel towards the left once again. Once you’re behind the corresponding vehicle, put you vehicle in drive and straighten out into the parking spot. Make sure when parallel parking you always have your foot on the brake pedal. Let your vehicle glide into the parking spot. If you accelerate the chances for error increase. Mirror to mirror parallel parking technique is popular, however it is inconsistent due to the various sizes of vehicles such as vans, trucks, smart cars, etc. At Street Smart Driver Education we encourage you to use this method to parallel park your vehicle as it is highly effective. #ldnont #streetsmartdriveredu #driversafety #phonedownldn #parallelparking
