Week 3 High School Games in Review So before I get to the game reviews I would like to thank everyone for sharing our Facebook link last week. Thanks to you we had over 1,200 people view our Week 3 Fearless Predictions! Rocky 53 – Ponoka 0 OK, let me first say that the rumors of an upgraded Curtis Field in Rocky are true. After years of going to games where that facility resembled a parking lot more than a football field it was great to see lush green grass covering the field. Congratulations to the football community in Rocky that made the upgrade possible. Unfortunately, the warm-up was the high point of the game for the Broncs. The Rebels big and aggressive defense absolutely smothered the Bronc’s offense from the opening whistle to the final buzzer. Defensively, Ponoka was unable to slow down the Rocky juggernaut that finally looked like the team that was expected to dominate the Rural Division. The Rebels utilized numerous athletes to score majors on both pass and run plays and looked more determined to score than in previous games. The Broncs will have to put this game behind them, re-group and stay positive. Lots of football left. Wetaskiwin 7 – Stettler 3 As expected, this was a tight game dominated by the defenses. Stettler held a 3-0 lead until late in the 4th quarter. With time winding down, Wetaskiwin was able to throw up a big pass play for a touchdown and an important divisional win. Sylvan Lake 14 – Notre Dame 7 A rough start for both teams in this one. The teams combined for four turnovers and enough penalty flags to fill a laundry basket in the first half. Both teams had opportunities to score in the first half but turnovers or penalties ended what looked to be sure scoring drives. Half-time score 0-0. The second half saw little improvement in terms of execution by either team. With Notre Dame up 7-0 with two minutes remaining, Sylvan Lake was able to tie it up 7-7 with a major of their own. Not long after and with little time remaining, Notre Dame looked to take the victory by scoring a Rouge. However, the Rouge, that would have given the Cougars an 8-7 win was called back on, you guessed it, a penalty (no end). The ensuing Notre Dame fake punt play failed to score and the game remained tied with the Lakers getting the ball back in the dying seconds. Sylvan Lake immediately proceeded to put a miraculous 3 play drive together that resulted in a game winning touchdown with time expiring. An absolutely crazy finish! Hunting Hills 63 – Camrose 13 It took the Lightning a couple series to lose the bus legs and get on track but once they did they rolled to a dominating victory. Camrose, hampered by a small roster and some key injuries just did not have the horses to match the skill and speed of Hunting Hills. The Lightning chose to throw the ball more against the Trojans than in previous games and had significant success doing so. This improvement in the Lighting passing game was a needed diversification for a team that had been run heavy the first two weeks. Game of the Week Lindsay Thurber 33 – Lacombe 13 What a game! Two of the league’s heavyweights squared off under the lights at Great Chief Park to see who would stay perfect and who would suffer their first loss of 2013. The Rams and Raiders were fired up for this one and the boys came out swinging. The defenses threw haymakers while the offenses punched and counter-punched. Big plays were hard to come by, and every yard was heavily contested. This was old school football and a treat to watch. The Rams concentrated on their off tackle and outside run game while the Raiders were committed to their zone read attack. At half time the Raiders held a slim two point lead, 15-13. This was anybody’s game. The third quarter continued much the same way as the second quarter ended with physical play on both sides of the ball and Thurber slowly winning the battle of field position. The third quarter was costly for the Rams as they lost a few defenders to injuries. The Raiders took advantage of some newly found holes in the Rams defense and went up 22-13. Thurber’s defense continued to hold the Rams offense in check in the fourth quarter while the Raiders offense gained some traction and put up some more points to secure a twenty point win and continue their march to first place in the Urban Division.
