Week 3 of the 1964 baseball season sees some streaks end for teams and individual players. Lets start in the National League: St. Louis (3-2) saw their 11 game winning streak come to end at the hands of the New York Mets, no less, in a 14 inning affair by a tally of 5-2. It was the longest win streak for the Redbirds since 1943!They rebounded to win two of the next three games including a 6-0 shutout of Pittsburgh by Ray Sadecki. The Cardinal lefty has not allowed a run in his first three starts (27 innings). Speaking of Pittsburgh, the Pirates (2-3) saw a lengthy seven game win streak of their own come to an end with a 4-0 loss to Milwaukee on Wednesday. The Bucs batted just .203 the first four games of the week before exploding for nine runs in the fifth inning of Sundays 14-4 win over the Cards. Bill Mazeroski and Donn Clendenon had 4 RBI each. Cincinnati (3-3) remains in third place. Bob Purkey won his first game of the season blanking the Mets 3-0 on Friday. The two clubs split a double header on Sunday with the Reds scoring seven runs in the first inning of the nightcap on their way to a 13-5 victory. Marty Keough went 4-5 with two doubles and five RBI. Keough hit .562 (9-16) for the week. Philadelphia (3-2) had a winning record for the week with their last four games being decided by one run. After losing two heart breakers to Milwaukee, 4-3 and 7-6 (12 innings) the Phils came back with a 7-6 triumph over the Braves on Sunday. Ed Roebuck got the win and is now 2-0 since coming over in a cash deal from Washington on April 21. The San Francisco Giants (4-0) moved up in the standings mostly at the expense of the Los Angeles Dodgers. In between being rained out on Tuesday and Thursday in Chicago, the Giants beat the Cubs 7-3 in 10 innings on Wednesday. Then they proceeded to sweep the Dodgers over the weekend in L.A. Former Brave and first year Giant, Bob Hendley out dueled Don Drysdale on Friday, 5-1. Hendley allowed just three hits, fanned nine and didnt walk a batter. San Francisco followed that with their fifth extra inning game of the year, an 8-6 win in 13 frames with rookie Jim Ray Hart going 4-7, a homer and three RBI. The series finale saw the Giants win 5-3 behind home runs by Orlando Cepeda and Jose Pagan who hit two and three run shots, respectively. Milwaukee (3-2) played four games decided by one run this week; splitting them. In the Braves 7-6 loss to the Phillies on Sunday, Hank Aaron finally got off the home run schnide, collecting his first dinger in the Braves 16th game this season. Don Drysdale continues to wonder where the offense is as his Los Angeles Dodgers (3-4) have scored seven runs in his five starts. This week he beat Houston on Monday, 2-1, but had his consecutive scoreless inning streak snapped at 23. He lost to San Francisco on Friday, 5-1, losing for the first time in three decisions. His ERA is 1.00. Sandy Koufax punched out 13 Colt 45s in a 7-1 win Thursday improving his record to 3-1. Unfortunately, the Bums were swept in a three game set by the rival Giants over the weekend. In New York, the Mets (2-4) continued to show some signs of improvement. The sent the Cardinals to their first loss in 12 games with a 5-2 extra inning victory and beat the Reds in the first game of a double dip on Sunday, 4-2, behind the pitching of Al Jackson and a 3-4 day with two RBI from Jim Hickman. But they proved they were still the Mets, losing their four games this week by an aggregate of 32-12. Houston (2-5) saw their depths of dispair reach 11 losses in a row before defeating the Dodgers 1-0 on Dick Turk Farrells three hitter. The young Colts struck out 32 times in the four game series against L.A. The weather in Chicago has been awful this season....and so has the baseball, at times. The Cubs (2-2) lost two games to rain outs and two games to a lack of timely hitting. Chicago only scored nine runs all week and only five runs in their two wins but Bob Buhl beat Houston, 2-1 and Dick Ellsworth bettered the Colts 3-0; both hurlers allowing three hits each. Ron Santo earned Player of the Month honors hitting a red hot .450 in April. He also had seven doubles, three triples and three home runs. Besides leading the league in batting average, he also led in slugging (.925). The National League Pitcher of the Month was awarded to Cincinnati Red right hander, Jim Maloney. Maloney went 3-0 in April with a stellar 0.50 ERA.He started four games for the Reds, completed three, struck out 36 in 36 innings and chucked a no hitter against Houston on opening day!! Check out the complete National League standings below. Tomorrow, a look at what happened in the American League this week!
