Week 56 안녕하세요 여러분! :) Hey Everyone! Whats up?? How are you all? I hope youre enjoying the summer time over there and arent too hot! Dont want to rub it in for those of you who like winter but uhh... it was so chilly here this morning we ran to the computer room instead of the usual walk..so you could say winter is well on its way. good luck!! Ill soak in some cool for you ;) I was trying to figure out what to write about this week, but when I summed up the week I basically just saw a whole lot of English...English lessons, English classes and just more English teaching in all the spaces.. SO I thought id tell you a little bit about our English program and I guess the reasons I think its so popular over here and how it can be effective and also sometimes not so effective. Ill start off by saying ive never met or heard about students in the world that study more than the Korean people do! From the past year of being here, ive seen, heard and learnt first hand from not only the members and friends weve met, but also my Korean companions the following information and realities of Korean schooling..heres a brief summary: Korean students from age 15-18 start school at 7:40am and dont finish classes until 5pm and then have an extra compulsery personal study block at school from 5:30pm until 10pm!?!? Not kidding! Sounds crazy huh? But thats it, day after day for them until University! No wonder theyre so smart...haha. I dont know about you, but I thought the 9am-3pm school day was long enough....haha. Anyways, so the point I wanted to make is that a large population of the Korean people love to study; specifically English. So if you put up a poster on the street that says you can teach English for FREE, theres a very good chance youll get a call. So thats what we do a fair bit here as our form of service, we teach Free English for 30 minutes and then teach a message about our Church for the other 30 minutes! This is definitely Effective but I think it also makes us appear as nothing other than English Teachers to a lot of people and thats when it becomes uneffective. I think weve been finding it difficult in the past couple of weeks to really make sure people know that we are here to share a message about Christ and his Gospel, and that English is just something we do on the side. Were still trying to figure out how to more clearly define that line, and so this week weve had to talk to a few people and will have to in the week to come) who think were only good for English teaching and dont want to listen to our message. I just wish they could understand how much more valuable and precious our message is than the English we teach! Also, Lucky none of them know I only got a C in English at highschool and im really not that good at it anyway hahah...ahhh. Its allgoood, wish us luck! on a positive note - half the people were teaching are picking up a very nice Aussie accent so thats always a positive! Cultural Eating: I havent done a cultural eating segment for a looong time because I think ive just about eaten all of the weird and wonderful (and sometimes scary) things Korea can throw at me...but todays cultural eating is one that made me veryyy happy and I think will put a smile on your faces too - its not Korean cultural eating, its AUSTRALIAN cultural eating! So this week we finished up an appointment at one of our amazing members neighbours houses so we then decided to walk accross the 2m hall and visit our lovely Member friend aswell :) (Just a little spoiler - this was the best decision we could have made that day)Because after we went inside and got talking, guess what she had for me...you probably wont be able to so ill just tell you... a real life MEAT PIE!!!! not even kidding! Shes so thoughtful and lovely, she was looking on the internet one day for some Aussie food that she thought I might be missing and she came accross meat pies and thought shed order some for me! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, you can just imagine how excited I was hahaha. #culturaleating #aussiefood #meatpielife And on that note, im off! I hope you all have a great week and enjoy life wherever you are in the world!! Im thinking of you all, I miss you and love you! The Church is True!! 매티슨 자매 Sister Mathieson
