U11 Girls Skyline vs. Augusta FC Score: 2-1 NRU Goals: Riley Verniel and Ashlynn Mitcham The NRU U11 girls Skyline team played AFC on Sunday on home turf. This was a big victory for NRU and their best performance to date. During the first half of the game, the NRU defense kept busy as they consistently shut down AFCs attack in NRUs defensive half. The defense was awarded in the 20th minute when NRU forward Ashlynn Mitcham blasted through AFCs defense at the half line and scored a breakaway goal putting the score at 1-0, which remained at the half. NRU came out very strong in the second half as the girls worked together really well to control and move the ball around the field. Riley Verniel mimicked Ashlynns goal by exploding past AFCs defense just above the half line and buried the ball in the corner of the goal. All four keepers (Scarlett, Chloe, Fiedra and Addie Z.) were fearless in the goal, stopping many tough shots. It was a well-earned victory by NRU! At practices this week, NRU looks to continue working on shooting and supporting on the attack. U16 Premier Academy vs. SOCA U17 Score: 4-0 Against SOCA U17 on Saturday, the team controlled possession against an understrength SOCA team, comfortably scoring four goals early in the game. The team understandably took their foot off the pedal, as SOCA played with nine men. With that said, the team played with maturity and especially looked to transition the ball from each side of the field and work on technical aspects of the game. Beau Houchins had a particularly strong game as striker and attacking midfielder. U16 Premier Academy vs. HVSC U18 Score: 5-3 On Sunday, against HVSC U18, the team won 5-3, with the score not showing the clear dominance of possession and attacking flair in the game. Some defensive lapses gave HVSC two goals in the second half that went against the narrative of the game. Cam Bissell, Ryan Hepburn, and Harris Salom dominated midfield play in every aspect of the game. John Caudill and Kevin Long also had fine games in central defense and right midfield respectively. U17 Boys vs. ODS United (Presidents Cup Match) Score: 2-1 NRU Goals: Ryan Hepburn (2) The Boys traveled to Richmond for their first Presidents cup game and came away 2-1 victors.
