Week recap The Santa Paula Football Boosters will absolutely and positively support the new coach just as we recently did for the schools selection (now abruptly ended) of Coach Yarnall. We respectfully seek public answers as to why a 14-17 thousand dollar gap in requested salary from Coach Yarnall could be reasonably negotiated. The school was well aware they were hiring a skillful and knowledgeable coach from the LA area that has much higher salaries. His offer letter said the pay was open to negotiation. Why would you spend a million dollars fixing up the new stadium, to achieve a first class football program and not spend a little extra, in the scheme of things, to secure the services of a first class coach to take our football program to the next level? The flagship program for high school and universities are typically their football program. Regionally St. Bonaventure, Nordhoff, Westlake, Camarillo and others spare no resource and effort in running a top notch program, because of the powerful statement it makes about their school. Santa Paula has had its football glory and we believe in our schools potential to once again succeed and reach those levels of play. But we will not get there by the black eye the program gets when we fail to handle the simple hiring process of a top notch coach in a fair and open manner. What top coaches will apply in the future after the simple hiring of a greatly qualified coach falls apart amid so much controversy and confusion only to be replaced by a local previous assistant coach of former Coach Sanchez? At the recent high school Board Meeting held on June 3, 2013 it became apparent that at least two of the Board members had any awareness of the situation. How could there be no awareness at the Board level of so important a matter to the high school athletic program? We believe the Board members as well as the public have the right, and deserve answers. Why is it that Coach Yarnall sadly had to inform the football players on June 3rd at 4 P.M. that he was resigning only to have the job offered to a new coach at 6 A.M. the same morning. What was the rush? Was it to keep the program going? Or was it really to keep Board members from questioning actions that are questionable and prevent reconsideration of this issue. In any event, any hiring is not officially until approved by the Board and likely ratified by the new Unified School Board. We do not question the right of the Board to make these decisions. This is what they were elected to do and we trust them to do so. We only ask that this matter be openly reviewed at the next available School Board meeting (or a Special Meeting) before the reputation of Coach Yarnall is besmirched and the confidence of that the sports loving public and parents is lost.
