Week two has ended, and we believe Sharon has weathered the worst - TopicsExpress

Week two has ended, and we believe Sharon has weathered the worst of the cytakine storm - a condition in which the donor t-cells attack the hosts body, resulting in high fevers and heart rate, and very low blood pressure. Large volumes of fluids are given IV but the body, in survival mode, wont release them, resulting in painful swelling. On day three, chemotherapy is administered to kill most of the t-cells, leaving the remaining donor cells unharmed. By day six, today, the fever is gone, heart rate and BP are under control, and Sharon can hopefully leave ICU to return to the Bone Marrow Transplant Floor. She has been carefully monitored by the UMMC staff, and every remedy available has been used to help her through. John has been right by her side through it all (if he ever considers a career change, the medical world seems to suit him!) Thankfully, she wont remember most of the past week. Sharon will spend Thanksgiving and her 30th birthday in the hospital. Were looking forward to James and Grace joining us this week, and to our first Thanksgiving with our new son-in-law. Your prayers and encouragement are an important source of strength for us all, so please keep them coming! Have a happy holiday!
