Weekend Box Office Update; Part 1: The Debuts Eight new films - TopicsExpress

Weekend Box Office Update; Part 1: The Debuts Eight new films opened this weekend over $100,000, including five new films in The Top 10! No new films debuted in the top spot this weekend however the closest they would get would be the Friday debut of Dracula: Untold. With that Dracula: Untold debut in Number 2 position with $23.5 million. Dracula: Untold exceeded most predicted estimates by 6-7million dollars, which is good news for the first chapter in the re-imagining of The Classic Universal Monsters Series of Films. Dracula: Untold success domestically is in part due to the brand name, strong word-of-mouth and the Halloween Season, but on the flip side the film does have a long way to go to meet its budget of $70 million. Dracula: Untold should have decent success over the next couple of weeks with the only competition being Annabelle and Ouija (two weeks out), over this week expect moderate numbers of $2-3 million daily for a week of $32-36 million. On the long range $95 million is possible for Dracula: Untold. Alexander and The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day had a modest and accurate debut of $19.1 at Number 3. With a $28 million budget the film should have no problem going into profit in the next week. For the week ahead expect around a $6 million increase for a $25 million total by Thursday. Long range forecast would be somewhere in the mid $50 million range. The Judge opened in the Number 5 position with $13.3 million. The award hopefully starring Robert Duvall, Robert Downey, Jr and Vera Farmiga, The Judge grossed inside the estimates given for it, however with a $50 million budget it may be tough for it to move into profit on the domestic level(internationally it should go into profit). The week ahead should be alright for The Judge earning around 4-5 million. Long range on The Judge will around $40-50 million. After being postponed twice, Addicted finally opened in an 800 screen count to a positive outcome of $7.6 million for a Number 7 debut. Addicted is likely to gross somewhere in the $15-25 million range. Documentary Meet The Mormons debut at Number 11 with $2.7 million on 300 Screens. Meet The Mormons should do somewhere around $6 million dollars. The Jeremy Renner film Kill The Messenger debuted outside the Top 10 with $939,000 dollars in 300 screens. Kill The Messenger may get more attention come later in award season with an expansion run, if it doesnt a $15 million run is possible. Opening with the two best Per Screen Averages this weekend were; Whiplash from Sony Picture Classics with $24,000 average on 6 screens for a total of $144,000 and St. Vincent starring Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy with $30,000 average on 4 screens for a weekend total of $121,000.
