Weekend Rant #114 An open letter to all active High School swimming coaches, officials, and parents: If you care about the sport of swimming at the high school level for your son or daughter then it must be recognized there are key issues that have had a negative watershed effect (excuse the pun) on their participation. 1. It should seen as a crisis situation that we do not have a Prelims / Finals state championship meet for our girls and boys. This does not help teach the sport to our children and further hurts them being recruited for college competition. 2. The fact that the state meet IS still being held in The Marshalltown YMCA pool with a shallow turn end (choppy water), poor air quality, and minimalistic cool down / warm-up conditions is further hurting our athletes from posting optimal times based of the training they have done each season. There are better facilities that could be used and our swimming competition should be held at a site on par with those used for football, track, wrestling, and volleyball. 3. The contact rules need to addressed so that expert coaches / the most qualified individuals in the sport are allowed on the pool decks to instruct our athletes. The current rules in place run against the fact that Iowa is a right to work state and should be challenged in our courts and at our statehouse by our elected officials. 4. The IGHASU and the IHSAA should be combined and streamlined into one governing body for high school activities in Iowa. DPS
