Weekend Reading: Necessary Lists Here are some of the key lists I encourage you to keep: 1. A list of people you want to meet and interview. I think of this as my Lunch List. Some of the people on it are famous; all of them have integrity, insight and character. They are people I respect and admire. As a teenager, I met Senator Everett Dirkson in his office, and later caught a ride from Madison to Milwaukee with Wisconsin Senator William Proxmire--then called home and begged my Dad to come get me! Years later, I became friends with Thomas Leonard before his untimely death. Ive met and talked with over 30 people from my list, often because of odd coincidences that would never have happened if I didnt have the list. Whos on your list? 2. A list of books and educational programs. Part A is a lifetime list, and mine has perhaps 200 items on it. Part B is a list to read or watch as soon as possible. This years list has 21 titles on it and Ive got most of them, piled up, ready and waiting in my office. My list is divided between history, biography, business development and novels. Whats on your list? 3. A list of things to do or experience. Have you always wanted to learn a language, climb a mountain or scuba dive? Put it on your list! How about seeing a Broadway play, or dinner at a famous restaurant? Put it on the list! At my age, I dont know how or when Ill visit Mt McKinley in Alaska, but I have climbed some of the tallest mountains in the lower 48 and McKinley is still on the list because Ive seen impossible things happen before! 4. A list of lifetime goals. For me, this is far bigger than my goals for the year or projects on the calendar. This is about a Foundation I want to start and fund before I die. It includes visiting a hospital I helped build in Ivory Coast back in my 20s. I want to see Winston Churchills home at Chartwell and walk the causeway to Mount St. Michael at low-tide. What are your dreams? List them! There is magic and power in lists! They arent something I look at every day, or even think about all the time. But they are in my journal and they fuel my imagination. They keep me reaching and wondering and occasionally give me courage or daring when I need it. And when I look at the items Ive already crossed off, they make me grateful. Have and maintain the lists of a high achiever. They are your previews of lifes coming attractions. ============================================ Be kind to yourself and to someone else, and have a wonder-FULL week! Philip E.
