Weekend Review: No intro for this review, just going to go straight into it today: We Are The Ocean Maybe Today, Maybe Tomorrow 2012 Genre: British Soft Rock ‘We Are The Ocean’ were completely unknown to me before I started this review so I had no idea what to expect. This band is kind of good but they lack one key ingredient that every rock band needs, originality. All the way through this album I couldn’t help but compare to other Soft Rock and Alternative bands. The second song the album ‘Bleed’ (the first song was an intro track) has some very strong similarities with British rock bands, particularly Heavens Basement. Despite this ‘Bleed’ is a good, powerful, and energetic song which kicks off the album perfectly. The following song, ‘Young Heart’, could easily pass as a ’30 Seconds To Mars’ song which, if you’re into that kind of thing isn’t a big problem but, ‘We Are The Ocean’ need to stop copying other bands and should just be themselves. ‘Story Of A Modern Child’ is next on the track list and with this song the album follows it pattern with this generic and mediocre song. This albums concerning lack of identity continues to be apparent in ‘Machine’ as this sounds like ‘Panic! At The Disco’ crossed with ’30 Seconds To Mars’ and this song is very average and depressingly normal. Track number seven, ‘Golden Gate’, kicks off with a slow tempo and takes about a minute to get going and get into full swing but, about 30 seconds later it recedes back into its shell and returns to its slow, dreary pace. This song is a roller-coaster between good and terrible music and sounds like it can’t make up it’s on whether it should be acoustic rock, soft rock or alternative. ‘Pass Me By’ injects some well needed and far overdue energy back into the album and is the first consistently good song since ‘Bleed’. The last song on the album is called ‘Chin Up, Son’ and is the undisputed worst song on the album. This is a slow acoustic song should be tranquil and calm but frankly, the vocals are terrifying. They’re terrifying when the vocalist shouts and groans random words half way through lines and when the vocalist is completely out of tune for most of the song. This album is lacking a serious amount of personal identity and is extremely repetitive. ‘We Are The Ocean’ need to abandon the ’30 Seconds To Mars’ tribute act sound, they also need to stop trying to be the next ‘Heavens Basement’, or the next ‘Deaf Havana’, or the next ‘Panic! At The Disco’ and just focus on being the first ‘We Are The Ocean’. Review Rating: 6 https://youtube/watch?v=GLjU5TK2stU
