Weekend Wisdom Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, recently announced that he is gay. He is the first CEO of a fortune 500 company to publicly embrace this. And being that he is the CEO of Apple, this is huge. Tim Cook is from my home state of Alabama. Alabama has long been known as a state of inequality and is still arguably the most racist state in America. From a historical perspective, Alabama is known for many significant events that shaped the desegregation in America. We all know about Rosa Parks and the Civil Rights Movement. Even in 1963, the University of Alabama was still an all white college when Vivian Malone and James Hood, black students from Mobile and Gadsden, attempted to enroll at the University of Alabama, the states flagship university. Alabama has always been last to act on these issues. Alabama just legalized interracial marriages a short 14 years ago. And even today it is legal for a business to fire an employee that is gay or lesbian. How has this not been addressed and changed? Alabama is my home. It is where I have spent the majority of my life. My family and closest friends are all there. My daughter was born in Alabama and I will always love and appreciate the life that I have experienced in Alabama. But its time to change. Alabama, its time to grow up. Its time to level up and be the change. Its time to move forward and embrace all and everyone that make up our beautiful state. Its time for equal rights to all people, unconditionally. Hats off to you, Tim Cook. Youre first class.
