Weekends are a little quiet at the hospital since most of the staff are off. The exception would be when our granddaughter and her family come to visit. As you have seen from her pics the kids got involved in the therapy session. It gave Betty a real boost as well as an energy infusion. She was also visited by the Buezis family. John and Lu are members of our Elk EV group. Today I was trained in how to assist Betty in taking a shower. (It’s not what you think!) My involvement is primarily to keep her from falling. The point of the therapy is for Betty to learn to be independent again. I had to fight my urge to help her. Not always an easy task. I left shortly after that session as I have a sore throat and don’t want to share. Betty called me a few hours ago with some fantastic news. The speech therapists want her to try to eat a normal breakfast! You can’t begin to realize what a giant step this is. The doctor has also taken her off of the bag for nourishment. In its place they injected liquid nourishment into the feeding tube. (Which is what I will be doing when she comes home.) The only side effect she felt was a bloated feeling. After all, she has been on “drip feed” for more than a week and her stomach has probably shrunk to the size of an orange. I was able to get to see a doctor earlier today and he gave some antibiotics and said that I would not be contagious tomorrow so I will go back to the hospital to keep her company and to get more training for assisting her at home.
