**Weekly Community Shout-Out Alert** This week I would like to highlight board certified gastroenterologist and member of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Bhupinder Bhandar of Fremont. Dr. Bhandari is a recent recipient of the Jefferson Award, a prestigious national recognition for those performing magnanimous community and public service. For more than 30 years, Dr. Bhupinder Bhandari has committed his time, energy and resources to ensuring that everyone in his community receives proper health care. Dr. Bhandari has played an instrumental role in starting free health clinics at local Hindu and Sikh temples in Fremont. He also donates his services at the Fremont Senior Center, and on top of this he is committed to mentoring young medical students. Living in and serving a city so rich in cultural diversity, and an Indian immigrant himself, Dr. Bhandari understands the struggles many people in his community may face. “Many times the immigrant patients and their families may not have insurance coverage,” Dr. Bhandari said. With a basic understanding of 10 languages, Dr. Bhandari has helped coordinate an annual health fair in Fremont to raise awareness on local health issues such as diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart disease. But what sets Dr. Bhandari apart, and what makes him so deserving of national recognition, is that he consistently goes beyond the normal call of duty for his patients, community leaders and patients have said. In addition to offering many of his services free of cost, Dr. Bhandari takes the time to personally call his patients at home simply to ask how they are doing, and/or feeling. Dr. Bhandari is to be commended for his passion and determination toward bringing health care to all people—those who can afford it, and those who cannot. Dr. Bhandari epitomizes all that it means to be a humanitarian and a model citizen. It is my great pleasure to congratulate him on the occasion of his well-deserved national recognition.
