Weekly Message August 3rd, 2014 Fr. Thomas During the summer Sundays in our weekly lectionary we’ve been reading through the story of Jacob in the book Genesis. Last month, we heard about Jacob’s dream in the wilderness, having had to escape his brother Esau’s wrath, and finding God even in the desolate wilderness. “Surely, the Lord is in this place, and I didn’t even know it,” he exclaims. It’s easy to find God’s presence in traditional religious settings. It’s another thing to find God in the disorder and confusion of a world which is either indifferent or antagonistic to religious faith and practice. In this week’s first lesson, (Gen. 32:22-31) Jacob wrestles with one who is eventually identified as God, and wins! His name is changed to Israel which literally means just that, “One who wrestles with God and wins.” And that seems to be the story of Israel ever since. When forced to swim against the current, we don’t give up and “go with the flow;” we just have to swim harder. Yes, the water will get choppy, storms will arise, but if Jesus is asleep in the back of the boat – then do what the disciples did - wake him up! Remember the story of the persistent widow (Luke 18:1-8) who kept bothering the judge with her request? Be persistent; don’t give up. The most effective Christians in the present world were, and are those whose eyes are firmly fixed on the next. ANNOUNCEMENTS HOSPITALITY HOUR Sunday is hosted by the Congregation.
