Weekly Message October 19th, 2014 Fr. Thomas A Sufi master (an Islamic mystic) lost his car keys and was out on the front lawn of his house on hands and knees in the early morning looking for the keys through blades of grass. A couple of his disciples came along and asked him what he was looking for. He replied, “I’ve lost my keys and I’m trying to find them.” Attempting to help, his friends got down on the ground with him. When it began to get hot, they became somewhat restless so one of them asked, “Sir, do you remember where you laid them?” “Oh yes, I know. I left them inside the house.” To which the disciple asked, “Then why are you looking for them outdoors?” “Because there’s more light outside,” came the answer. Point of the story – we as humans have lost “The Key”; lost the way of understanding God, ourselves, and our world. The joy of being connected with God can be found only if we look deep inside ourselves. More often than not we look “outside” the home, the church, or the scriptures for more pleasure, security, power, and affirmation. However, what we find is the darkness of our isolation from God. Yet, God calls us out of the darkness into His marvelous light. Despite lots of bad advice and hollow wisdom which can easily be found on television, the internet, or on bookshelves, maybe we only have to look inside to discover the “key” which has been there all along - and thank God for the grace given to each of us through Jesus His Son, by the power of His Holy Spirit.
