Weekly Report The first Major of the year took place at Kilrea Golf Club last Saturday, with the annual staging of the Marion Lennox Open. On a perfect day weather wise the 100 plus competitors could have no excuses. After the scores were tallied local Kilrea man Denver Johnston(18) emerged as the clear winner with a super score of 41pts. Indeed it proved to be a family affair as Denvers brother Jason Johnston(13) picked up second spot with a score of 38pts. A solid back of 20pts was enough for Jason to relegate Niall McWilliams into 3rd spot. Niall playing of 16 had 19pts on both nines. Visitor Donal Mulholland picked up the Gross prize with a fine score of 72. In the minor prizes it proved to be a Swatragh 1-2 as Liam OKane picked up the F9 and Ciaran Lagan the back nine, both with 21pts. Belfast based Peter Cooley weighed in with his customary prize winning the Nearest the Pin on the 16th and big hitting Clark Rees won the Longest Drive down the 18th. In the Ladies section Veronica Kelly topped the polls with a fine score of 38pts, with Anne Marie Donaghy clinching second prize on 36pts. All the prize winners received their spoils at the evening presentation. On Sunday the focus turned to the GUI events. Joe McCloskey and his Pierce Purcell travelled to Gracehill GC to take on Ballymena in the first round of the matchplay stages. And it turned to be an outstanding win for Kilrea as they romped to 4.5 - 0.5 victory. In this difficult format of foursomes golf for players in the 12-17 handicap range Kilrea are proving to be a strong force. The winning partnerships were B.Millar/T.Rogers 2/1, K.Kidd/G.Donaghy 3/2, S.Quinn/G.McTaggart 6/4 and G.Bradley/D.Kealey 6/5. J.Henry/U.Watt were called in. This puts Kilrea into the last 16 in Ulster and the draw will be made later this week. The Junior Cup team travelled to Ballycastle in an attempt to qualify for the matchplay stages but shorn of a few players, due to other committments, who may have strenghtened the team they came up short. Best of the day for Kilrea was Brian McGill with 82.
