Weekly cases of hand, foot and mouth disease are at their highest - TopicsExpress

Weekly cases of hand, foot and mouth disease are at their highest this year - at just over 1,100. This was revealed by the Health Ministry today. So far, about 21 thousand cases have been reported this year. While a common symptom of the disease which usually affects young children is mouth ulcers, pediatricians who have been treating this strain of HFMD are seeing more blisters on the body. Doctors say this strain of the virus can also easily infect family members. So, to minimise contact, doctors advise parents to have their children wear long sleeved clothing and to wash their hands when changing diapers. Separately the MOH said it has been notified of a cluster of 8 children with influenza and another 10 with influenza like symptoms at ACES Montessori Kidz at Downtown East in Pasir Ris. The MOH said all the affected children are currently recovering and that the public should not be alarmed. 938LIVE/sr
