Weekly e-Tidings An email publication of The First Congregational Church of Danbury, May 8, 2014 Mother’s Day From Pastor Pat Think about it…. when you think of God, what qualities come to mind? Compassion? Creativity? The one who provides for you, who takes care of you? The one who you call on when you’re hurt? The one who brought you into being? If this pretty much fits your comprehension of God, then think about this: that description fits mothers just as easily. There’s a reason for the similarity between God and mothers in our minds. That’s because our very first impression and encounter with God takes place in our mothers’ arms. Our first infant inkling of what it means to be cared for forms in our image of her. Faith formation is a process that takes our entire lives, but begins with the qualities of compassion, creativity, nurture and feeding, consoling and healing that you’d find on a mother’s “resume.” Sure… mothers are human, too. There are times when they fail to measure up to the task. Sometimes our relationships with our mothers can be some of the most trying in our lives, mainly because they know us so completely. But if we remind ourselves about what mothers have taught us about God at the earliest times, then we can respond to our mothers as God does with us. We love them anyway. This Sunday on Mother’s Day, however, is about more than just the women who serve as our own mothers. It’s about the tremendous dedication of so many women throughout our distant and present church history who have made it what it is, who have staffed our programs and fund raising efforts and continue through their selflessness, to make things happen. Echoing this coming Sunday’s gospel reading in which Jesus reminds us that he is the shepherd who lays his life down for the sake of his flock, women have always taken a key role by giving of their own lives for our sake. Come join us Sunday when we explore this story and thank the shepherds in our own midst. – Pastor Pat ________________________________________
