Weekly e-Tidings June 26, 2014 An email publication of The First Congregational Church of Danbury. Worship this Sunday -- Our 4th of July Celebration – Special Music Hymn sing begins at 9:50am. Next Sunday: July 6th: Summer Sunday Worship will begin at 9:30 am. From Pastor Pat Since this Sunday is the last before the 4th of July, be sure to get to church a little early this Sunday for a patriotic sing-along with Jim Moriarty. It will be a good tune-up for our special June 29 service this week. For a congregation such as ours that dates back to 1696, it’s natural for us to feel quite a connection to Danbury and the Revolutionary War. This Sunday we’ll be exploring the ways that our religious forefathers (and foremothers) perceived the role of area churches in the face of oppression and, ultimately, violent war in pursuit of freedom. And we will also be taking a REAL look at what freedom means as viewed through Christ’s eyes. James Moore’s excellent book, One Nation Under God: The History of Prayer in America, shares with us the enormous role prayer played in the rebellion against Britain, and even more so in the infancy of the nation when revolutionary leaders had to come to terms with when and what to pray in a land of so many faiths. One occasion was July 9, 1776, shortly after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, when Anglican Reverend Jacob Duche took the floor in Philadelphia as the first chaplain of Congress. Realizing the enormity of what they all had done, Rev. Duche prayed: Look down in mercy, we beseech Thee, on these our American States who have fled to thee from the rod of the oppressor, who have thrown themselves on thy gracious protection, desiring to be henceforth dependent only on Thee … defeat the malicious designs of our cruel adversaries. This Sunday we’ll explore the ways that we can be guided through a warring world of growing conflict, and find our own peace and freedom for daily life. (And by the way, this is the last Sunday that services will be held at 10 AM before the Fall: next Sunday we meet at the cooler summer hour of 9:30.) ------ Pastor Pat
