Weird circus fact: In 1810, an early circus rider, Cayetano Mariotini, performed a farce of "The Fisherman, or the Metamorphosis." He entered the ring on two horses, with a foot on each horse, dressed as an immense fat fishwoman, in a huge bonnet and uncouth garments. As he rode around the ring, he discarded these garments and several other suits, ending his final bow dressed as an elegant cavalier. (via the New York Clipper, April 2, 1881, p. 1.)
