Weirs are not swimming holes! Don’t get sucked in - rethink - TopicsExpress

Weirs are not swimming holes! Don’t get sucked in - rethink it. Every year, we run a weir safety campaign to educate the community about the dangers of swimming in weirs and flooded waterways. We manage 51 weirs across South East Queensland. As they are part of the water supply network and not a recreation area, they are often in secluded locations without any staff or rangers nearby. Weirs are designed and built to regulate water flow. They are dangerous and unpredictable places – you never know when, or from which part of the weir, water will be released. Many people fail to realise that swimming skills have little to do with surviving a flooded weir. The facts are it only takes ankle deep water to knock you off your feet, and only 60 seconds to drown – not enough time for someone to call 000. Prevention is the best defence. Don’t get sucked in! Rethink your decision to swim in weirs. There are a number of Seqwater lakes with designated swimming areas for you to enjoy in a fun and safe environment. Check our website for tips on how to play it safe at our dams, lakes and parks. #weirsafety #playitsafe
