Welcome Home! As their plane landed, they could see through the window of the airport at all those people waiting, smiling and waving. Just knowing this “Welcome Home” was in part for them. They had just returned from an entire year (some even longer) in a far off place called Vietnam. Where there were few friends. Where friends, brothers, fathers, cousins and even sisters, were lost to the angers of war. They stepped through the doorway in to the terminal, heads high, chests out and big smiles. In only a matter of seconds, the happiness left their faces, their heads lowered and their shoulders slumped. For what they heard were phrases of “Baby Killers”, War Mongers” and “Animals”. Such a way to welcome home, those so willing to give their life for freedom, by those so willing not too. J. Paul Johnsen
