Welcome! I just want to put it out there that I am NOT against the idea of an Organic Waste Program. What I do have concerns with are the following, and I hope that as a group we can work together to come up with a common mandate to bring to City Council via a petition. 1) many citizens have voiced that a curbside recycle pick up is more important than organics from a lifestyle point of view. 2) the city is not giving an option as to whether or not households will participate in the Organics program. Not only is there a mandatory bi-monthly fee, but those caught putting organics in the garbage or vice versa can and will be FINED via RANDOM bag check. 3) homeowners will be responsible for the care and maintenance of green bins, including the supply of bio-degradable bags approved for use in bins. 4) many homeowners do not produce much organic waste because they: A) have their own compost B) have a garborator 5) the City did a very poor job of informing citizens of their options or that a vote would be done on Dec 16th. To simply say well you should have read the paper is not a good enough justification. As I said, Im not against the organics program, and down the road it may be a great idea should it be implemented after proper citizen consultation, but right now its infuriating.
