Welcome again to Throwback Thursday video game reviews, where I talk about games that I played as a kid that either you did, or didnt know about, but either way you should play. Today, a cult following title, that recently has grown huge in popularity, Earthbound, and one of my favorite games of all time. Plot: The main reason I love this game so much. Keep in mind this was a modern RPG at the time, set in the 1990s It starts, with a meteor hitting the Earth. As you go to investigate, in your jammies I might add, youll find your Friend Pokey, who is harassing the cops for info. Later Pokey wakes you up, banging on your door, begging you to help him find his brother. When you find him, Pickey points out that his brother was a coward and ran away, as youll find later on the true extent of Pokeys cowardice. As you head home from the meteor strike, an alien appears to inform you that in the future, and evil alien known as Giygas has taken over the Earth, and left it in ruin. It is up to you and 3 other children to save the world. This game has eeevvrrryyything, a Blues Brothers knock off band, a cult that believes they should paint the world blue, a corrupt judicial system in your home town, these adorable creatures called Mr. Saturns, and even a yellow submarine. Oh, and a visit from the Loch ness monster, that you get to hitch a ride on. It has some interesting Hindu elements in the plot, at one point, you have to go to battle the evil in your own mind, called a Mani Mani statue, and once you defeat him you become more powerful. You eventually meet the 3 other kids, a girl with psychic powers, a boy from Dalaam, and a nerd named Jeff, whos father Dr. Andonuts, lives next to Stonehenge, and creates a flying saucer for you to travel around in. Truly one of the most creative games Ive ever played, Im not going to talk about the graphics, mainly because what you see is what you get, it was a snes after all, and because this game could have run on MS DOS and I would have still loved it. Presentation: Surprisingly it didnt do very well in America at the time of its release, mainly due to poor advertising, and Japanese RPGs were still a brand new facet in American culture. As I said it has gotten so popular that it warranted a sequel in Japan called Mother 3, never released in the U.S. However, some fan boys have made a translation, that can be injected into the rom to be readable in English. Music: The number 2 reason I love this game so much. From the beginning as the sun rises over Onett, to the quirky sounds from Saturn Valley, this game has some incredibly enjoyable music, which always fit the place you were in. Heres my favorite tune from the game, the 8 melodies. Your goal is to collect these melodies to the sound stone, which after you do so, touch to your head, which is how you are able to go inside your mind to defeat the evil there. Find this game, play it, its one of the few video games that deserve the title, Work of art. youtube/watch?v=c-7YkjBC8Ak
