Welcome new Shawnee Mission Teachers New Shawnee Mission School District educators reported for work this morning. To celebrate the start of their work in the district, Board of Education members and district administrators welcomed these individuals with a New Teacher Breakfast. More than 130 new employees celebrated the occasion, centered on the theme “Off and Running,” on Monday morning. Board of Education President Deb Zila and Superintendent Jim Hinson were among the first to welcome the attendees to the event and wish them well as they begin work in the school district. Dr. Hinson reflected on the enormous impact the teachers will have on students. “You will literally change the lives of students,” Dr. Hinson said. Bluejacket-Flint sixth-grade teacher Lindsey Constance, who earlier this year received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, also welcomed the teachers. Constance, who was a student in the Shawnee Mission School District, provided some advice and spoke about the teachers who positively influenced her life. Without these teachers, Constance said she would not be where she is today. “Many years from now your students might stand in front of their colleagues using you (as an example of) inspiration,” she said.
