Welcome to December! Check out NWS Reno Weather Update for this week. We are expecting snow tomorrow followed by a period of cold temperatures for the balance of the week. • Snow - a strong cold front will move through the region Tuesday morning, bringing a period of snow to most locations in the Sierra and western Nevada. Confidence is high in there being snow but still only medium in the amounts. We are thinking 2-5 inches of snow in the western Nevada valleys - with slightly higher amounts in the Sierra and foothills. There is a chance (~30%) we could see even higher amounts if the storm lingers longer than expected. • Travel Impacts - Snow is likely to fall during the morning commute time Tuesday. Given this and that this storm is going to be the first decent snow of the season for many communities - this would be a good morning to plan on extra time for travel. Snow may persist into the afternoon/evening especially near the foothills and the Sierra from Tahoe south into Mono County. • Cold - temperatures behind the front Wednesday through Friday will be quite cold. While its not unusual to have periods of chilly weather - afterall it is December - this airmass is quite cold and widespread. Well likely see daytime temperatures remain below freezing even in the western Nevada valleys with morning lows in the teens/single digits (colder in the Sierra). Confidence in the temperature forecasts is high. See the attached graphic showing the 24-hour temperature change from today to tomorrow - thats cold!
