Welcome to National Wolf Awareness Week Day #5. Todays featured book is Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat Never Cry Wolf is a fictionalized story of Mowats experiences observing and learning about wolves in sub-arctic Canada. It was first published in 1963 and a movie of the same name was made in 1983. This book and movie are often cited for helping to change the general public’s opinion of wolves from ruthless killers to intelligent, playful animals with strong family ties. Unfortunately, the fictionalization of the story has led it to receive quite a bit of mixed press. L. David Mech is a well-known researcher who has been studying wolves since 1958. Of “Never Cry Wolf”, he said: Whereas the other books and articles were based strictly on facts and the experiences of the author, Mowat’s seems to be basically fiction founded somewhat on facts. It appears to have been compounded by his own limited adventures with wild wolves plus a generous quantity of unacknowledged experiences of other authors; a certain amount of imagination and embellishment probably completed the formula for this book. Mech also states that he has never known of a large predator who survives mostly on mice and other small prey, as do the Arctic Wolves in Mowat’s story. If the reader can keep this information in mind, remembering that this is a fictionalized account; the book is still a very good read. It is definitely worth reading this story that was to change the perception of our beloved wolves. #bewolfaware -Laughing Wolf
