Welcome to New Mexico…….got milk? After logging another 12 hour, 614 mile day from Abilene to Lordburg, NW it sure is nice to know that we only have 546 miles left….!!! The drive from Abilene to El Paso was longgggggggg and pretty dull. Although we did stop in Midland for lunch. Thankfully the Whatabuger had truck parking so I wiped that Budget rental car in the lot next to the semis full of oil and refinery parts. If you have never been to Midland/Odessa its quite an experience with all the oil wells, and men wearing their cowboy drag. These are real cowboys….We felt a little out of place wearing our gym wear and I believe I was the only one wearing bright red sneakers, felt a bit like Dorothy with her red shoes. The rest of the drive was pretty but boring until my gas light came on and literally there wasnt a gas station for 40 miles…..I was on the phone to Scott Gulledge saying stay behind me in case I run out of gas….thankfully rolled into a town, with one gas station and filled it up. Crisis solved. Was getting a bit tired and hit El Paso at 4:15. I though the drivers in Miami were aggressive when I lived in South Florida, huh…..El Paso is absolutely crazy….its a free for all….anything goes and it takes forever to get through it. Never knew it was so big…..Shortly after leaving El Paso we cross over into New Mexico and the I kept smelling something strange….At first I thought it was a tire factory and then I thought, no thats sewage…. ahhhhhh….it has to Juarez, I bet the wind is blowing the wrong way and the poor Mexicans living on the border, with all the drug wars and no they have to smell this….kept driving and driving and the smell got worse……I looked to the left and saw dairy cows….lots of dairy cows and more dairy cows….Now, I grew up in rural IL , not far from the dairy state of WI and never have I ever smelled cows like this…..It went on for miles, right along the 1-10 and this is not a rural area…OMG….. After that eye watering experience drove a few more hours and here we are at the Days Inn in Lordsburg, NW…..They do accept pets, $15 per pet, yes, I told them we had 1 and snuck all 3 in the back…..Dont tell me you wouldnt do the same….So for $55 with my AAA discount and a $15 pet fee we are all settled in for our last leg tomorrow….. Well for those wanting to learn more, heres an article I dug up on google for your bedtime reading…..sweet dreams :-) New Mexico Dairy Pollution Sparks Manure War : NPR npr.org › News › US › Around the Nation Dec 9, 2009 - On Dairy Row along Interstate 10 between Las Cruces, N.M., and El Paso, Texas, more than 30,000 cows live in 11 farms located one after the other. ... Even more serious than odor and flies is the threat to the watershed. P.S. The next time you complain about where you live think of the poor souls living between Las Cruces and El Paso….it could be worse :-) ….. got milk?
