Welcome to Wednesday everyone! Hope you are all making it through the week. Heres the answer to Mondays Challenger: What symptoms make Streptococcus infection unlikely? Indicate all choices. Answers: C: Tender posterior cervical nodes D: Nasal discharge F: Absence of cough Rationale Streptococcal infection or pharyngitis is strongly suggested by the presence of fever, tonsillar exudate, tender, enlarged, anterior cervical lymph nodes, and absence of cough. Typically, Strep throat has an incubation period of 2-4 days and is characterized by sudden onset of sore throat, cervical lymphadenopathy, malaise, fever, and headache. Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain have been noted in younger patients. When evaluating a sore throat, the most important historic information to obtain is whether other symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection are present or not. Children with streptococcal pharyngitis do not have cough, rhinorrhea, or symptoms of viral upper respiratory tract infection. Therefore, the diagnosis of streptococcal pharyngitis can effectively be ruled out on the basis of the clinical findings of marked coryza, hoarseness, cough, or conjunctivitis.
