Welcome to all future geologists to the 36th International Geological Congress. Maybe you are a future geologist from South East Asia? If so, you should know that a while ago, geologists from five countries in SE Asia (India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) came together and invited the IUGS to host their quadrennial meeting in New Delhi, with the theme: “Geosciences: the Basic Science for Sustainable development.” During the 34th IGC Congress in Brisbane in 2012, they won the bid to host the 36th event, which is slated to take place 29 Nov.-5 Dec. 2020. Our page statistics show that a typical IUGS Facebook follower is from SE Asia and under 24 years old. So by the time the 36th IGC begins, these followers will be approaching 30 years old, still early into their geological careers and possibly key contributors to this important global geological event. 36igc.org/committee.aspx Who knows, this FB page and its administrators might still be around too. (In the meantime, our African friends are busy with the 2nd circular for the Congress in 2016: more of that to come in a later post 35igc.org/)
