The authors have been deeply involved in all aspects of caring for children whom, for one reason or another, have been outside of the natural parent family unit for part or all of their lives. As a concept we believe stewardship to be a modern, realistic framework for moderating the lasting impact of detachment and grief while providing the child with a happy and fulfilling life .We believe adoption is one of the most damaging forms of care, to cut and traumatise a child from their flesh and blood parents, siblings grandparents and cousins With current Australian States and Territories’ law there are a number of permanent care options available ranging from kinship care to adoption. Overall we believe that the arrangements available under permanent care placement are preferable to adoption because of the greater transparency and optional involvement of natural parents and because psychologically, over a lifetime, the possibility of harm to all involved is greatly reduced.We believe this to be the least harmful alternative to adoption, which respects the childs right to know their origins and we have included references that reinforce how we reached this conclusion.
