Welcome to our new moon cycle! Today the Sun has entered the fiery, Jupiter ruled sign of Sagittarius, and we begin a new monthly journey in the sign of the centaur. After 30+ days of heavier, fixed energy, we are now entering a sign known for its positive and uplifting signature. After todays post I will also be launching my daily horoscope kickstarter campaign. So given todays bright Sagittarian new beginning, lets discuss the deeper archetypal meaning of our new season! Sagittarius is one of four double signs of the zodiac, all of which come at the end of the four seasons (the end of spring, summer, fall, and winter). Sagittarius is the half man/half horse, whose fiery arrow is pointed upward and outward. To get a deeper understanding of this complex symbol we have to go back in time to the Greek myths. Centaurs were known for being complex creatures. On the one hand they could be wild and unruly savages and party animals, but on the other hand they were sophisticated sages, healers, and teachers (like the centaur Chiron, for example). Their double nature is of course a metaphor about humanity. Within each of us there is a roaming, free-spirited, pleasure seeking gypsy or nomad. Within each of us there is a party animal and trouble maker. And then at the exact same time, there is something inside of us whose drive for freedom at all costs somehow pushes us to chart the stars and study our fate. We seek for the higher meaning or purpose in our lives, and we aspire to know and experience more, becoming wiser for the wear. Always upward and onward, learning and evolving! Sagittarius is a fire sign, and as such represents the spirits desire for freedom, for consumption, and for ever brighter animation or life. Its never enough for fire. More, hotter, brighter, upward, illuminating as it goes. As a mutable fire sign, Sagittarius is highly adaptable, changeable, and excitable. Bored quickly, rarely resting, and always ready to gallop onto the next adventure, Sagittarius is like the part of the animal that will bite its own leg off just to get out of the limitation of the hunters snare. Life and the essential experience of freedom are intense motivators for Sagittarius. One of the core Sagittarian dilemmas always comes back to the ability to take new experiences and integrate them into elevated levels of meaning, purpose, or understanding, as opposed to falling into a kind of pointless hedonism (a simple recycling of the same pleasure cruises over and over). At the same time, Sagittarians who discover higher meaning or truth cant stop there. The real Sagittarian calling is the calling of the endlessness of expansion. The learning and growing never ceases. Because if the learning and growing stops, then we get the burnt out bi-product of expansion...the dud whistler of a 4th of July hangover: dogma. The real test of a Sagittarius is to recognize that growth and meaning and purpose and higher truth arent destinations...they are ways of seeing, ways of being, and ways of creating. The possibilities for meaning are not to be collapsed into a singular explanation or theory (tempting as it may be for the target eyed archer!). The archers gift is the ability to illuminate a larger horizon ahead...to penetrate the hearts and minds of others with the call to explore and plunge forward into the unknown with the wildness of a stallion! This is so far from the mantras and new age knowitallisms we end up hearing all the time...we need to spur ourselves onward and past these animal traps. :-) So at this new moon time, consider the call of the horse in the sky. Move beyond your limitations, and enter the unknown of this darkest time of year with celebration in your unlimited heart! Prayer: I can hear the pounding of celestial hooves on the ground of my soul. Wake me up, its time to go again!
