Welcome to public education. Listen... Our schools are filled with great teachers, great administrators, and great students. The biggest lie in education right now is that schools are failing. But, Nikki, (gasp) what about the the 1200 third graders in Tulsa that couldnt read last spring?!?! - thats the big question. Could they truly not read? Or, could they not pass the OCCT? Did they speak English? Lets talk about what foundation a child needs for reading... Ready... Language, language, and language. You want to change education? Change the economy! Decrease poverty! You want to change education? Stop taking away time for language acquisition and let children play! You want to change education? Let children read what they want! Stop leveling every aspect of their micro-managed day. Our schools are not failing. We are failing our schools. We must look at where the money is going - well, Ill just tell you... Data, testing, and technology. We MUST move from being data-driven and student-informed to student-driven and data-informed. We must... Or there will forever be failing public schools.
