Welcome to the BUSINESS DISTRICT Stinging Butterfly The great boxer, Muhammad Ali, said, “I float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.” Imagine that concept applied to your business. A butterfly is a small thing and a bee makes its presence known. What is your vision of the business you are developing? Is the size of the business a measure of its importance? Simply because there are more employees than a year ago, is your business more impressive? Are your friends, neighbors, and business associates truly struck by your visible success? Let’s factor in the Louis Sullivan expression that “form ever follows function.” Does your organization “look” like it should look. It is structured and staffed to bring about the exact results you are attaining. An accompanying maxim states that “every system is perfectly designed to get the results it gets.” How is your organization design? Are you achieving your goals? Are your goals the ones you should be pursuing? What is more important to you, making an impact or the size of the company? The stinging butterfly produces more noticeable results than the placid elephant, but the elephant draws more attention. I’m certainly not against a company that grows in response to the demand for its goods and services. An organic growth for those reasons will tend to keep its structure intact in order to provide the same outstanding customer service. The butterfly and the bee are just a start.
