Well, FB friends, this past week Ive shared some of my favorite James Brown quotes. I havent given all of them to you. That aint gonna happen. Some have been known by a lot, some by a few, a couple have been personal moments. I dont believe, like so many do and have done these past couple of weeks, that EVERYTHING has to be made public. Some things need to go into the ground or urn or wherever with you. I will share one more personal story here for my final James Brown quote of the day. This is a long one...the story, not the quote :). My very first day on the job as part of the management team for James Brown was the day of the MTV VMAs (Video Music Awards). It was 2003 and the first one since 9/11. Mr. Brown was the surprise guest to come out and dance with host Jimmy Fallon. It was a long and weird day, but the quote I want to share with you came moments before Mr. Brown hit the stage. We were in the elevator at Radio City Music Hall. I was there with others - theyll remain anonymous - but all I could think about was how unlikely it was that I was in an elevator with James Brown, no less working for him! The elevator doors opened and Simon Cowell of all people, was standing there. That was also bizarre. But I was with JAMES BROWN! I turned to him just as he was about to walk to the stage and I asked: Can I do anything for you Mr. Brown? And, he turned to me, with his hands clasped in front of him. Here he was, The Hardest Working Man in Show Business, Mr. Dynamite, Soul Brother #1, The Godfather of Soul. Can I do anything for you, Mr. Brown? He looked me right in the eyes and said: Pray for me, sir. James Brown was asking ME to pray for HIM! I wanted to remember this moment for the rest of my life. Its seared into my brain. I did pray for you, Mr. Brown. And every night since then. Im hoping YOURE praying for US now, sir!
