Well, I just got back from a very short utilities meeting and a very long city commission meeting, with very little news to report. The most interesting thing for me was that apparently Comcast has entered into a new venture with another company and now our areas cable TV service will be known as Midwest Cable (I think that names right). Also, there were lots of resolutions which had to be read and voted on which took up a lot of time. The new director of the McMinn County Economic Development Authority was there to get the commission to take care of some paperwork so that she could be included in the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System, I believe her name was Kathy Knight (Im sure about Knight, not so sure about first name but I believe Im right). Right before adjournment I expressed my thanks to Charles Slack, Dennis Morgan, and Burke Garwood (even though Burke probably will be back) for their service to Etowah and its people. Charles and Dennis both expressed their thanks also and Dennis added that he only hated that he didnt get done what he wanted to get done when he first took office, and that was to clean up Tennessee Avenue. He cited the great progress in demolishing houses on the back streets but also mentioned that when people came to Etowah they had to come there via Tennessee Avenue. Burke, in his own indomitable way, said no one has enjoyed it more than I have and Ill be up the street on my porch if you need me. Matthew Gravleys city manager report offered no noteworthy items, except there was a long (and I mean long) discussion about a lease agreement which included a pickup truck for the police department, which Burke took exception to, saying the police department did not need a pickup truck. This was very late in the meeting and some people were talking but if I heard correctly the commission tabled the lease agreement until next month. (NOTE: I may be wrong on this one thing; if anyone reading this knows better please correct me.) The meeting was then adjourned. P.S. I dont know the effective date of the change in Comcasts name.
