Well...I let SB out two nights ago, same as always. He was to take his turn on the night watch and protect the house as his family slept. Before I closed the door behind him he had already taking his perch, center porch, waiting for any foolish intruder that would enter his domaine. The evening started as normal with cars speeding by and the occasional raccoon family parading along the rock walls that surround the property. He knew what his job was and he did it well. Cold in his decisions and indifferent to his prey he did what had to be done. He was plagued with no regret when he left evidence of the night before at various doors to his home. Our home. He sought no reward for what he did, for it was his nature. But this night was not the same. After we had to gone to rest for the evening and SB lay in wait a different intruder came to visit. A pack of coyotes, rare but not unusual came across the yard...Sbs yard. He sprang into action at once. SB knew the key to any attack was surprise and chaos. He did what he knew. SB attacked the alpha male first, landing on its back and raking it eyes. With the manic yelping and confusion that followed he attacked what he thought was the alphas mate. She had turned toward the choas and was on guard as SB spun toward her. Her guard was no match for SBs ninja training and her guard was turned against her as SB feinted up and punctured her soft underbelly. But there was a mistake to made that night. SB had not anticipated the size of the pack. From the other side of the wall there came a whirlwind of action. Grey and brown and black fur everywhere. A pack of 25 animals. SB fought valiantly and took 9 more with him and died next to the alpha male that he had killed first...thats how I see it going down. R.I.P. SBJ. One of kind.
