Well I was headed to bed as its been a long day (again) but several things popped up. 1) The Flash Flood warning that is being broadcast all of a sudden. A couple of things. It appears to be an extension of the same warning that has been in effect all day. It also has several odd things about it, one being that its partly for the American Fire in El Dorado County. The American was in Placer county, was last year, and the soil is is pretty stable now so not sure what that is all about. The other is that they are warning about flash flooding but that doesnt often occur with steady rain like this. All that we can figure is that there is a large area of intense rain that just came on shore south of SF and they are concerned that the saturated soil will shed it. However that body of rain is headed more up the valley so maybe they were just butt-covering. The last part is that it really only applies to the burn areas of the two fires and will affect very few people but they have now freaked out two counties... 2) I was made aware of a new graphic by the NWS (thanks Reanna Lacy) which ties in to an earlier question someone had about a possibility iof snow to 4000ft. It looks like the polar influences (part of what brought us this storm was a polar cyclone up in the Gulf of Alaska) may be stepping in more than they expected as the NWS is forecasting several inches of snow at 4000ft and 1-3ft (as opposed to up to a foot) at 6000. It will be interesting to see if this comes to past as this is still a relatively warm storm (though colder than most fed by the Pineapple Express). Other forecasters arent calling this snow level yet so we will see. The blizzard conditions have been predicted all along so be careful if you must hit the highways.
