Well, I’ll be blunt: Danielle’s MRI shows a new young tumor - TopicsExpress

Well, I’ll be blunt: Danielle’s MRI shows a new young tumor growing even deeper in her brain than the one that was removed in July. Microscopic cells of cancer migrate from tumors to find a spot to grow in the host, and that’s what’s happened here. It is too small yet to have any effects on Danielle’s daily life, but it has to be dealt with. We were stunned to hear this news yesterday from Dr Rosen, and I felt so helpless when Danielle began crying in his office. However, Hope again lifts her fair head, because Dr Rosen says he has a few options. One is another gamma knife, because since this is a new location, that might kill it off. Another is to deliver chemo directly to the tumor. Since her shunt (drain) was removed, the chemo would stay in her brain and get to work. She responded so well to chemo for her breasts, and it’s the same cancer, so that is the route Dr Rosen favors right now. He will consult with the rest of Danielle’s doctors and he will refer us to a neuro-oncologist who has experience with this method. It requires a routine surgery to implant a tube aimed at the tumor, then chemo. He told us to keep on with life as usual (as if!), and Danielle seemed to forget about it as a few hours passed. So if you see her, don’t bring it up unless she does, and then please try to change the subject. She had a sweet smile on her face when I kissed her goodnight--she likes to get kisses. It is 4:40am and Ive been awake for the past 2 1/2 hours but I lay there and listen to her breathe, and time my breathing to match hers. It makes me feel better. Thats all I feel like saying right now. I am numb and can hardly look at her without the tears starting to flow, but we have no choice but to hang tough. That’s all we have; that and good wishes and love from friends and family. We couldn’t do it without you. Thanks.
